Safety Adam Archuleta brings experience to a position where youth gave the Bears problems last year and will fit right back into the system he thrived in with Lovie Smith as his defensive coordinator in St. Louis. Darwin Walker, who ranks fifth in the NFL in sacks the last five seasons, will do more than fill in for Tank Johnson, and rookie tight end Greg Olsen gives beleaguered quarterback Rex Grossman another target that can stretch the field. Have faith in Cedric Benson, who was a workhorse for all of his four years at Texas. He can carry the load and has the potential to be better than Thomas Jones as an all-around back.

MINNESOTA Vikings (9-7): You have to like a team that ranked top in the league last year in rushing defense. With a veteran offensive line, they will control the line of scrimmage. What will hurt them the most this year is inexperience at the quarterback position, where Tarvaris Jackson will start in only his second year. Head coach Brad Childress, who was offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles before taking the plunge with the Vikes, thinks he can be as good as Donovan McNaab, and if that means he's on the bench 10 games a season, that's fine with me.

Green Bay Packers (5-11): So the old gunslinger felt like getting his butt kicked for one more season, eh? I can hear the cheers from Halas Hall. The thing is, he could get away with his inconsistent play (a.k.a. oldness) if he had a good running game to brunt the load and move the offense. But they don't. Their run offense is anchored by some guys named Vernand Morency, Noah Herron and rookie Brandon Jackson. Have fun with that, Packers fans. Their defense will be average at best with the 13th-ranked run defense and 17th-ranked pass defense coming back from last season. I would have put them last but the Lions are in this division too.
Detroit Lions (4-12): No matter what ESPN tells you about the Lions being a possible surprise team, don't listen to them. The Lions will be terrible again this year. They took another wide receiver in the first round, though they didn't really have much of a choice with all-world (just like Charles Rogers, right?) Calvin Johnson falling to them at No. 2. But Dre Bly is gone making an already bad defense even worse, and John Kitna is still the quarterback. Last place it is.

NFC East

Dallas Cowboys (10-6): Losing a hall-of-fame coach is usually a bad thing, but it won't be for the Cowboys. The departure of Bill Parcells means everybody can loosen up a little, mainly prima donna wide receiver Terrell Owens. With a more lax atmosphere, T.O. might actually be good again. Real good again. Rookie quarterback Tony Romo has a year under his belt and isn't holding snaps anymore (stop crying, Cowboys fans). The combination of poise and potential he showed last tells me he's going to have a big big year. Plus, they have man-child DeMarcus Ware and veteran Roy Williams anchoring the defense, putting the Cowboys over the top for me in the East.

Philadelphia Eagles (9-7): The Eagles remind me a lot of the Chicago Cubs the past couple of years. They pour money into a couple of oft-injured superstars they expect to carry the team, who end up getting hurt every year, hampering the team on the field and in the pocketbook. (Damn you, Mark Prior and Kerry Wood!) With the Eagles, those players are quarterback Donovan McNaab and running back Brian Westbrook, and if those players actually manage to stay healthy, then the Eagles are set. But NFL fans know the drill by now: By week six they'll both be on the bench and the Eagles will be struggling for points. They just didn't make enough moves to push the Cowboys for top spot.

New York Giants (9-7): I don't think I've ever seen as much turmoil thrust upon a team from a couple of guys that weren't even suiting up. But with all the noise made by Tiki Barber's new book stating that head coach Tom Coughlin drove him away from the game and defensive end Michael Strahan "contemplating retirement" (he was pissed because he didn't get more money and didn't want to look like a bad guy), the Giants have already gone through their season's worth of adversity without even stepping onto a field. Quarterback Eli Manning has enough weapons and enough chances to have proven himself by now, but has failed to do so.

Washington Redskins (4-12): This team has fallen off the map despite spending oodles of money on players and a hall-of-fame coach. Their offense (20th last year) and defense (27th) weren't any good and haven't gotten any better through off-season acquisitions. Too few moves to correct too many problems. They will be one of the worst teams this year.

NFC West

St. Louis Rams (13-3): While you probably won't see any surprises in the other NFC divisions, the NFC West is a division in flux. The perennial powerhouse Seattle Seahawks aren't as overwhelming as they once were, so the division is open for any one of these teams to take charge. The St. Louis Rams have a high-powered offense with Steven Jackson churning up unbelievable all-purpose yards and veteran quarterback Mark Bulger hitting future hall-of-famer Tory Holt for big gains through the air. The addition of wide out Drew Bennett will only make their offense better. In a division marked by big offenses, the Rams are the best prepared to take the top spot.

San Francisco 49ers (10-6): I've been really impressed with the progression of young quarterback Alex Smith from overwhelmed rookie to poised leader. He will be the key this year for a team with one of the league's best running backs, Frank Gore, coming out of the backfield. If Smith can produce through the air (He should now that the 49ers stole the Seahawks' main aerial weapon, Darrel Jackson.), it will give them the balance to pass up the old guard Seattle Seahawks.

Seattle Seahawks (9-7): It's not that I think the Seahawks are bad, it's just that they didn't really get any better while the rest of the division was slowly catching up to them. They have health questions with quarterback Matt Hasselback and Shawn Alexander, and they lost their top wide out Darrel Jackson to the 49ers. They will be fighting for a playoff spot and may even make the postseason, but there are too many questions for me to put them back at the top.

Arizona Cardinals (5-11): "They are who we thought they were!" Sorry, I just had to use it one more time before the new season washed away all the memories from last year. Every year I hear about the Cardinals competing for a playoff spot, but I just don't see it. Matt Leinart will be good, and he's got good weapons to throw to, but their offensive line still stinks it up, and without a good line they aren't going anywhere.

NFC South

New Orleans Saints (11-5): You wouldn't know it by their week one 41-10 drubbing at the hands of the Indianapolis Colts, but the Saints are far and away the best team in the division. Drew Brees is running an offense stacked with weapons, especially lightning-in-a-bottle back Reggie Bush. With tremendous balance on the ground and through the air, they are sure to put up a lot of points. They just have too much talent, even if it is just on one side of the ball, for the rest of the division to even stay close.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (8-8): It was hard to put a team with this little talent on offense and diminishing talent on defense this high up, but they showed resiliency last season in winning some very close games. Quarterback Chris Simms has shown that he can be a good NFL quarterback before going down last year with a nasty spleen injury (anybody whose had a spleen injury has to have something good coming his way). Cadillac Williams figures to rebound after a down season as well. They'll just miss out on the playoffs this year.

Carolina Panthers (6-10): What's with this team? They're good, they're bad. They're up and down. I'm sick of picking this team to excel and watching them be inconsistent. So I'm putting the hammer down and putting them third in a weak division. Serves them right.

Atlanta Falcons (3-13): What is there left to say? They lost their only viable weapon in Michael Vick to prison, and their solution to a bad receiving core is old man extraordinare Joe Horn. To make it worse, Joey Harrington is now the starter. Gives you the feeling that Michael Vick got the good end of the deal.VinnyRicohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16618400987044133748noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36189465.post-36672002375058467732007-07-20T11:13:00.000-07:002007-07-20T11:15:23.994-07:00NFL Football Bad News HeadlinesFor once there's mostly crime in the NFL news headlines.

Check this out:

VICK INDICTED BY GRAND JURY
Atlanta have insisted that Michael Vick's current problems will not derail their pre-season plans.

CULPEPPER FINALLY LEAVES MIAMI
Miami Dolphins have officially released quarterback Daunte Culpepper.

ALLEN SUSPENDED FOR TWO GAMES
Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen has been suspended for two games by the NFL.

CHARGES DROPPED AGAINST McNAIR
A drink-driving charge against Baltimore quarter-back Steve McNair has been dropped.

RHODES AND COX HIT WITH BANS
Dominic Rhodes and Torrie Cox have been banned for four games for violating substance abuse policy.

COX HIT WITH FOUR-GAME BAN
Tampa's Torrie Cox has been suspended for four games for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

BEARS WAIVE JOHNSON
Troubled defensive tackle Tank Johnson has been waived by the Chicago Bears.

DOLPHINS' EVANS ARRESTED
Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Fred Evans was arrested after a scuffle with police.

JONES TO FACE TWO FELONY CHARGES
Suspended Tennessee Titan Adam 'Pacman' Jones faces two felony charges.

Lots of bad press for the NFL and football in general.VinnyRicohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16618400987044133748noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36189465.post-31006254683779557692007-06-21T13:50:00.000-07:002007-06-21T13:52:37.938-07:00Adam 'Pacman' JONES TO FACE TWO FELONY CHARGESArrest warrants were issued on Wednesday for Adam 'Pacman' Jones and two members of his entourage, both of whom also face felony charges.

The 23-year-old faces two counts of felony coercion stemming from allegations that he threatened to kill employees inside the Minxx Gentlemen's Club on February 19.

Robert Reid, 37, faces one count of felony coercion. The deal, which included a rookie-record $20 million signing bonus, contained an incentive clause that allowed Manning to void the final two years.

To guarantee Manning's future with the team, the Giants added the 'buy-back' option, a clause which permits the team to buy back the 2008 and 2009 seasons for a reported $5 million.

Manning's contract was scheduled to end after the 2007 season, when he could have become a free agent, but the Giants decided to stick with the 26-year-old, who is coming off an inconsistent 2006 campaign.

Despite leading New York to an 8-8 record and a second consecutive post-season berth, Manning struggled in his second full season as a starter, passing for 3,244 yards, 24 touchdowns and 18 interceptions to finish with a 77.0 quarterback rating.

Manning showed flashes of brilliance in 2005, throwing for 3,762 yards and 24 TDs to lead the Giants to the NFC East Division title.

The San Diego Chargers initially selected Manning with the first overall pick against the wishes of his family. Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi jumped at the opportunity to acquire the quarterback but paid a steep price.

As a result, the Giants sent quarterback Philip Rivers - the fourth overall pick - and three other draft picks including a 2005 first-round selection - to San Diego.VinnyRicohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16618400987044133748noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36189465.post-30233292008959131092007-03-09T12:56:00.000-08:002007-03-09T12:57:16.188-08:00Super Bowl XLIThe Indianapolis Colts won Super Bowl XLI after beating the Chicago Bears 29-17 at Dolphin Stadium in Miami, Florida.

The Colts, who dominated throughout, recovered from conceding a touchdown straight from the kick-off to take a 16-14 half-time lead which they would not relinquish.

Bears' Devin Hester got the match off to an explosive start with a 92-yard kick-off return for a touchdown but the Colts hit back when quarterback Peyton Manning picked out Reggie Wayne with a 53-yard pass less than eight minutes later.

However, a fumbled snap meant Indianapolis missed out on the extra point and Chicago extended their lead when Muhsin Muhammad collected a four-yard touchdown pass from Rex Grossman to go 14-6 ahead.

In the second quarter an Adam Vinatieri field goal and Dominic Rhodes' one-yard touchdown run put the Colts 16-14 ahead but Vinatieri missed the last kick of the half which would have increased his side's advantage.

Midway through the third quarter, with the rain continuing to fall, Vinatieri was back on target with a 24-yard field goal and he added another from 20 yards but it was only small consolation for Indianapolis failing to turn their territorial dominance into touchdowns.

Robbie Gould reduced the deficit by drilling over a 44-yard field goal 74 seconds before the turnaround.

However, the critical moment came four minutes into the final quarter when Grossman was picked off by Kelvin Hayden who ran the ball in for a 56-yard touchdown interception to put the Colts 29-17 ahead and on their way to a first Super Bowl victory since the franchise relocated from Baltimore in 1984.VinnyRicohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16618400987044133748noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36189465.post-43802815200633581082007-03-09T12:44:00.000-08:002007-03-09T12:54:36.983-08:00NFL News NFL Football News VinnyRicohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16618400987044133748noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36189465.post-1169453127000754242007-01-21T23:59:00.000-08:002007-01-22T00:06:04.683-08:002007 AFC Championship game Colts 38- Pats 34WOW what a game!!! We saw several teams come through in the clutch, including some previously winless teams. Here's a look at how each team fared on Sunday.

Panthers 23 Ravens 21

It's hard to peg these Carolina Panthers. First they lose a couple of games and then they rattle off four wins in a row. While the running game didn't do much here, neither did that of the Ravens. Carolina's defense appears to be improving and getting the big stops, while Baltimore's offense is abysmal.

Cowboys 34 Texans 6

Dallas backers were nervous early on, as Houston managed to keep things close heading into the half. However, the Cowboys got their ground game going in the third quarter and got to David Carr the rest of the game. It was an easy cover for Dallas.

Lions 20 Bills 17

Detroit was one of three winless teams to get their first win Sunday. It was a hard fought victory over Buffalo. The Bills started slow in this one and it cost them. Kevin Jones had a couple of key first down runs in the final quarter, as Detroit finally learned how to finish a ball game and was home underdog winner.

Saints 27 Eagles 24

It's official, I am now believer in the Saints. At 5-1, there's no more disputing them as a top tier team. The Eagles' defense was just not good enough in this one, as Drew Brees was able to bring his team back late after they had given up a big lead. He held his own with Donovan McNabb and now Saints bettors after sitting on a pile of money.

Giants 27 Falcons 14

It was a case of the New York defensive line duplicating their performance from Week 5 and Michael Vick being kept in the pocket. Jeremy Shockey played and was great, as was Tikki Barker. Giants backers not only covered as a road dog, but they won the game outright! Atlanta looks like a shaky bet right now.

Jets 20 Dolphins 17

Did people really sit down and watch this entire game? Wow, brave souls. It wasn't pretty, but New York covered and got the job done. Defense and sloppy offensive play ruled this contest, as New York squared their record and proved once and for all that Joey Harrington is not an NFL quarterback.

Broncos 13 Raiders 3

Denver continued their strong defensive play and Oakland continued to give the ball away. Bad penalties and poor decision-making marred this Raiders team in Denver. Oakland actually outgained the Broncos, but Denver made fewer mistakes.

Steelers 45 Chiefs 7

Finally, the real Steelers showed up for a full game. That big play defense made big plays and Pittsburgh climbed right back into the thick of things in the AFC North. Ben Roethlisberger had his best game of the season and Damon Huard didn't. The Steelers covered the big touchdown spread midway in the first quarter!

Chargers 48 49ers 19

Philip Rivers is getting more and more comfortable in that offense and LaDanaian Tomlinson proved why he is the best runningback in the game. San Francisco looked okay on offense, but their defensive secondary was brutal. The Chargers covered the huge spread easily.

Seahawks 30 Rams 28

This one was the most exciting game of the day. Seattle failed to cover as a road favorite, as St. Louis raced out to a big lead before crumbling late. A 54-yard game-winning field goal sealed it.

Bucs 14 Bengals 13

Another winless team gets a victory in Week 6, albeit not without a little controversy. A reviewed TD by Clayton seals the deal for Tampa Bay. The Bengals played well on defense, but their offense looked rusty coming off a bye week. Bettors saw another home underdog pay off.

Titans 25 Redskins 22

Speaking of winless teams getting their first victory... How about being a 10.5 point underdog and winning outright! Tennessee got a fantastic day on the ground from Travis Henry and a composed start from Vince Young. Mark Brunell and the Washington offense was sub par and their defense had some tackling issues.

VinnyRicohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16618400987044133748noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36189465.post-1161105292483856792006-10-17T10:13:00.000-07:002006-10-17T10:14:52.490-07:00NFL Week 5
Week 5 did not disappoint in terms of the marquee matchups. The Eagles squeaked one out versus a sloppy Dallas squad, the Chargers proved themselves against Pittsburgh and the Broncos bettered the Ravens defense.

Bears 40 Bills 7

You know what I love about this game? That Chicago is actually mad they blew the shutout, saying they lost focus. They are for real people.

Panthers 20 Browns 12

Ho…hum... we expected this result and sure enough it came through. Carolina is getting a better effort up front from the o-line, allowing the rushing game to get going. But wait, it was only Cleveland.

Vikings 26 Lions 17

That’s it. I give up. No more backing the Lions. For two straight weeks, this team was good enough to win on the road and they shot themselves in the foot with turnovers. Wow, are they ugly or what? We now know why Jon Kitna was run out of a couple of cities.

Patriots 20 Dolphins 10

Another predictable result. In fact, it finished exactly on the spread. Sure, Joey Harrington was better than Culpepper had been, but is that saying much? Tom Brady didn’t have to do much here; his defense took care of things.

Rams 23 Packers 20

It’s getting embarrassing for Brett Favre. He should have packed it in already. Too bad, it’s getting harder and harder to remember the good times. As for the Rams? Let’s see what they do against Seattle in Week 6.

Saints 24 Bucs 21

A nice win for Reggie and the Saints. This was a trap game, one that bettors were steering clear of and for good reason. New Orleans did not cover, and they may not again in Week 6 as a dog to Philly.

Colts 14 Titans 13

This would have been one of the biggest upsets in recent NFL regular season history. Vince Young may just win a couple of games this season. Or, maybe it’s that the Indy defense is very, very suspect. It’s probably a little of both.

Giants 19 Redskins 3

That’s more like it. We didn’t buy Washington as a playoff team coming into the season and this game showed what they’re capable of when it counts. New York HAD to have this game to salvage their season and it showed.

Chiefs 23 Cardinals 20

We liked Matt Leinart’s composure and determination. However, now that Larry Fitzgerald is out we don’t give him much success, especially against the Bears in Week 6. A nice win for KC. Herman Edwards has this team believing and we can’t really refute him at this point.

Jaguars 41 Jets 0

No one could predict an utter meltdown from the Jets. We saw this type of result for New York before the season, but not after a 2-2 start elevated expectations. Coach Mangini’s wisdom will be tested. As for the Jags? This was a statement, but they have to be more consistent for statements to mean anything.

49ers 34 Raiders 20

A nice rebound effort by San Francisco over a hapless Oakland squad. Could the Raiders go winless? It’s possible. San Francisco has got to work on their defense though, as their offense is shaping up nicely.

Eagles 38 Cowboys 24

What a great game it was. We appreciate the talents and leadership abilities that Donovan McNabb brings to the table- especially when you consider how bad Drew Bledsoe is. Philadelphia looks very, very strong.

Chargers 23 Steelers 13

We really thought the Steelers would prevail here. Their defense is just missing that big play ability right now and that in turn is exposing their offense as being average.

Broncos 13 Ravens 3

This was a battle to find out who the second best defense is in the league and we now know. Clearly Denver’s stoppers are putting together a prolific season, as they’ve given up only one TD in 4 games. Ravens fans have got to see more out of their running game if they want to dream Super Bowl.
VinnyRicohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16618400987044133748noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36189465.post-1161105178559901722006-10-17T10:10:00.000-07:002006-10-17T10:12:58.560-07:00Week 4 NFLIn Week 3, the dogs barked their way to a 10-4 ATS record while the 'overs' went 7-6-1.

The Cincinnati Bengals, Indianapolis Colts, Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints and San Diego Chargers have yet to drop the cash. The dog barked in this contest but overall it was a profitable week for the favorites as chalk teams went 11-5 ATS.

Week 3's schedule includes some good games across the board. The Chicago Bears and their stellar defense roar into Minnesota to face the Vikings.

Sunday's night cap features the Denver Broncos riding into New England to do battle with the Patriots. The Broncos have yet to put their backers at the ticket window with a 0-2 ATS mark.

And the must bet game of the week? The incredible match-up of 2-0 teams, as the Indianapolis Colts take on the charging Jaguars.

On MNF, it will be the Atlanta Falcons taking on the hosting New Orleans Saints. Both clubs have fattened the wallets of their investors with a perfect 2-0 SU & ATS number.

In Week 1, NFL teams struggled on offense making for a dominating 12-3 record in favor of the under, but in Week 2 clubs found more productivity offensively creating an O/U mark of 7-7-2.
